OpenAI announces its AI models have made new major scientific discoveries

OpenAI has announced three AI-generated discoveries in mathematics, computer science and physics, with independent experts set to review the findings.

In mathematics, AI has reportedly proved the local smoothing conjecture, resolving two longstanding problems known as the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures. In computer science, a new proof challenges the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Both results have been released publicly alongside formal verifications in Lean.

The physics breakthrough concerns existence proofs for four-dimensional quantum field theories, including QCD and Yang–Mills. Nobel laureate David Gross will help oversee the review.

OpenAI will fund independent verification without claiming academic credit.
